Alumni Present International Cultures | |

| Alumni Present International Cultures | 12 May 2005. The Republic of Karelia IATP center participants of the “Meeting of Cultures” opened the event with the hymn of the Russian Federation. The organizers sought to underscore the need to institute in children a deep sense of patriotism and pride in their country. Yet, one of the event’s primary target audiences, orphans, is often left behind in such endeavors. Alumni of ECA exchange programs decided to take this opportunity to reach out to the orphans and share alumni experience.
The alumni selected topics that best highlighted their views of the world and its cultures from several countries: Switzerland, Italy, the United States, Mexico and Russia. The presentations included each country’s symbols, national dress and other country specific items such as food, ideas, etc. The alumni also related factoids from specific to each country.
Representatives from the Republic’s Center of National Cultures were invited to present cultures of the “north” (Fins, Swedes, etc.) Additionally, dancers from the region’s master dance club shared Arabic and other Eastern national dances. The children were then invited to have some hands on tie with the props and items donated by the alumni as well as sample foods.
Seven alumni volunteers organized the event and did so in such a manner as to include others in project implementation with the goal of further disseminating a sense of volunteerism in the Republic of Karelia.
