1 March – 29 May 2006. The IATP center located at the Nizhni Novgorod Boarding School for Deaf Children hosted a public awareness outreach event titled “Rehabilitating Children with Limited Vision and Social Adaptation through Including Children into Existing Creativity On-Line Networks.”

The project stressed the involvement of pupils with special needs and those that have been working in the Intel, Inc. program “Time to Return Home” that seeks to create and expand an educational resource network using modern IT models. The main page of the project is located at http://www.leropisi.ru and seeks additionally to create a Russia wide listing of villages.

During the event, five lessons were conducted each two hours long and including 20 individuals and covered topics ranging from “Modern Internet Services for Creating Electronic Encyclopedias” to “Incorporating Modern IT into Pedagogical Work”. All sessions were led by ECA exchange program alumni (Bakhareva, Pararakhin, Gorshenina, Pozdeeva).

A group of 22 severely blind pupils, dubbing themselves “Wings”, formed from the event. Each individual pupil posted his/her own webpage at http://www.leropisi.ru which relates to Internet users information about his/her home village. Students from Nizhni Novgorod University were virtually on-hand to comment on the pupils’ work online.

The event was well covered in the mass media including the newspaper “Stocks plus Careers: #19 17 May 2006” in the article “We’re Together” by Elena Mamontova.
