An educational chat

On March 4, the first chat-seminar "Ethics and the Internet" was organized for teachers in Ekaterinburg. Frances Jacobson, an employee of the university library at Urbana-Champaigne, IL, conducted the seminar from the United States.
For dialogue between students and lecturer, a special room on the site www.epals.com (a server for communication among teachers and students from all over the world) was created.
This was the first successful realization of a seminar of this kind in Ekaterinburg - with the lecturer based in America and students in Russia. Given the time difference of 11 hours, Frances had to arrive very early for work, so the chat could not continue more than an hour.

Nevertheless, teachers greatly enjoyed the seminar. They asked questions about courses and the university, and looked through the links to sites offered by the lecturer. During the chat, the ethical problems of Internet use in a school environment were discussed. The next chat, with the preliminary subject "How to Evaluate Web Sites" is planned for the beginning of April.
