Opportunities for international scientific collaboration
Short term visits to the UK from the former Soviet Union
The Royal Society/NATO Postdoctoral Fellowship Programme
Joint projects under the former Soviet Union exchange programm.
The Royal Society's international programme provides grants for
Scientific research visits to and from the UK. UK scientists apply direct to the Society. Overseas scientists apply through the Society's partner organisations overseas where formal exchange arrangements exist, or the UK host may apply for grants for visiting colleagues. Grants are for individuals and the main criteria are the quality of the individual and the proposed scientific research. Grants are intended to provide for accommodation and subsistence. Some will also include the cost of international airfare and a contribution towards research related consumables. Details of schemes for specific countries and the relevant downloadable application forms are accessed via our country table (on their webpage: you will need to view this in full screen format to see all the information). For information on schemes for a specific country, use our country index (on webpage).
TYPES OF GRANTS
Study visit grants are short-term visits generally between two weeks and six months, the key objectives being to enhance the research capabilities of individual scientists, develop international collaborative links, enable participation in international programmes and preserve high quality science. Fellowship grants are aimed at young scientists and provide an opportunity to do research in a different country for up to two years. Fellowships are available under a scheme operated in association with NATO and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. Joint Project grants provide funding over 24 months for exchange visits to take place in connection with a bilateral research collaboration between a UK and overseas research group.
ELIGIBILITY
Scientists must be of PhD or equivalent status. Please see below for
specific conditions relating to joint project participants.
Fellowship applicants may be in the final stages of a PhD, but the
Degree must be confirmed by the proposed start date. Awards are granted for research in the areas of the natural sciences including mathematics, engineering, medicine, the scientific research
aspects of psychology, archaeology, geography and the history of
science. Awards are not granted in the areas of the social sciences or clinical medical research. Below are three types of international opportunities:
1. Short term visits to the UK from the former Soviet Union
Study visit grants are for short-term visits to enhance the research
capabilities of individual scientists, develop international collaborative links, enable participation in international programmes and preserve high quality science.
The Royal Society has formal agreements with the Academies of Sciences
Of Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Russia, Ukraine and Uzbekistan. Visits from these countries are normally made under theterms of those agreements. Candidates from these countries should approach their home Academy in the first instance.
If the application is, or is likely to be,unsuccessful (eg because the annual quota of visits has been allocated; the FSU scientist does not work in an Academy-affiliated institute; the FSU scientist wishes to come to the UK for over 3 months), the proposed host can apply on behalf of the candidate directly to the Royal Society for an Ex-Agreement visit. Visits from those FSU countries with which a formal agreement does not exist (Turkmenistan, Tajikistan and Kyrgystan), should bemade by the proposed host on behalf of the candidate directly to the
Royal Society.
Closing dates
Applications for short-term Agreement visits must be made to the home
Academy, which may have its own closing dates and application forms.
Applications for short-term Ex-Agreement visits will be assessed at 2
Annual closing dates (1 February and 1 September) with results available within approximately six to eight weeks. Proposed start dates must be at least three months after the relevant closing date.
Eligibility
Short-term visits are intended for scientists of postdoctoral status or
equivalent in the natural sciences including mathematics, engineering,
medicine and the scientific research aspects of psychology, archaeology,
geography and the history of science who have good contacts with a UK
scientist working in their field. Awards are not granted on the areas of social sciences or clinical medical research.
Scientists working in governmental research institutes are not excluded
From acting as hosts but they should explain, in a separate note accompanying the application, why their parent institute is not funding the visit. UK hosts should be ordinarily resident in the UK/EU or have held a position in the UK for at least three years.

2. The Royal Society/NATO Postdoctoral Fellowship Programme
The programme aims to strengthen scientific links between the United
Kingdom and Central and Eastern Europe/the former Soviet Union. Recently qualified postdoctoral scientists from Central and Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union may apply for 12-month fixed-term fellowships tenable in a UK laboratory.
Fellowship holders receive an award which covers living costs in
the UK, together with a contribution towards international return
airfare, research consumables expenses, conference and subsidiary visits. Fellows are expected to return to their countries upon completion of the fellowship, and fellowships are aimed at scientists who have not spent significant periods of time abroad.
The programme is supported by NATO (www.nato.int/science), but
Fellowships may also be part-funded by the UK Foreign & Commonwealth Office British Chevening Programme. The award may be reduced if funding is being received from another source.
Closing dates:
Closing dates for the programme are 15 April and 1 October. The UK host
scientist is responsible for completing the application form and
ensuring that all parts of the application form are received at the Society by the relevant closing date.

following countries: ALBANIA, ARMENIA, AZERBAIJAN, BELARUS, BULGARIA,

3. Joint projects under the former Soviet Union exchange programme
Closing dates:
Closing dates for applications are 15 June and 15 November.
Background:
As part of the Society's policy of encouraging scientific links with
countries of the former Soviet Union (FSU), applications are invited for grants for joint projects between two individuals or two research
groups, one in the UK and one in the FSU, over a period of two years. Funds are provided to cover international travel and subsistence for both project teams up to ?5000 per annum between them, to include up to Pounds 1000 for consumables. The funding provided is small scale and may be seen as seed money for larger, long-term collaboration and further development . Applications may build on already existing collaborations. Visits to establish initial contacts may best be funded through the exagreement scheme for short-term visits to the UK or through the study visit scheme for UK scientists wishing to visit the FSU.
Eligibility:
Grants are intended for UK scientists of at least postdoctoral status
and of proven research ability. Awards are granted for research in the natural and applied sciences, including mathematics, engineering, medicine and the scientific research aspects of psychology, archaeology, geography, agriculture and the history
of science. Please note that grants do not include the social sciences
or clinical medical research. Applicants will be UK citizens resident in the UK. EU citizens may apply provided they hold a permanent position in the UK. Non-EU citizens may apply provided they have held a permanent position at a UK institute for at least three consecutive years, exclusive of any period in full time education.
All visits funded by the grant must be made by collaborators (from
either country) of at least postdoctoral status (or equivalent) who may not concurrently hold another Royal Society award between the UK and the FSU. UK collaborators should normally be resident in the UK. Applicants wishing to include PhD students among both groups may be considered. The proposal must clearly indicate the direct benefits this would bring to the project overall and to the students involved.
Visits must take place in each direction (to and from the UK) in both
Years of the project. Applications will only be considered for bilateral (not multi-lateral)projects.
